Ecotourism is a growing trend in the hospitality industry. As eco-tourists continue to grow in number, ecotourism now represents 11.4 percent of global consumer spending.

But what eco-tourism is?

Ecotourism involves traveling to destinations where the natural areas and cultural heritage are the main attractions. It is a form of sustainable travel that aims to support the places we visit instead of exploiting its resources.

The concept is not new at all. Ecotourism, called nowadays in different terms such as green tourism, responsible tourism, and nature tourism started in the 1980’s. However, since the declaration of the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2017 as the International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development, the concept of eco-conscious traveling started to flourish anew.

After years of overwhelming development and suffering the consequences of its massive tourism, Boracay is now also gearing towards eco and sustainable tourism. Since the island’s reopening on October 26 last year, new policies and guidelines have been laid down. These changes only have one goal: to encourage island visitors to be more conscious of the impact they create.

If you want to make a difference in your next Boracay visit, here are a few tips on how you can be a certified “eco-tourist.”

Eco-Tourists Use Plastic Less

Plastic is a global problem, especially for the Philippines. The country is considered as third in the world in terms of plastic waste production. Luckily, Boracay already took one step forward by banning single-use plastic. Even hotels and establishments, for example, are required to use non-plastic packaging.

One thing eco-tourists can do is always to bring their bag when shopping. Have a refillable water bottle too to avoid buying water bottles which all in up in trash bins.

They Help Save Energy

Saving energy is a habit that should be practiced by everyone not just the eco-tourists at heart, and much more when traveling. When you’re staying in a hotel or resort, don’t forget to turn off the lights or any appliances when going out. Unplug gadgets if it’s fully charged. Doing simple things like that, as a result, will save your device and the environment.

Eco-Tourists Supports Local

Food-on-the-go contributes to a lot of single-use garbage.

Ecotourism also highlights helping local economies to prosper. So when you are traveling, choose local brands. Buy from local stores. Eat at home-grown restaurants. This way, you are helping smaller businesses, instead of giving your money to multi-million companies.

They Make Local Connections

To make your vacation more meaningful, make friends with the locals. The locals know best about their place so you will be guided truthfully. Also, make sure to do some research before going to your destination.

Mind you, making a friend in Boracay is not hard to do. You just have to smile and start a conversation. As a result, you can easily gain a friend and get a free tour guide too.

Eco-Tourists Leave Footprints Only

Take nothing but memories. Cliché as it sounds, but it is always right. Eco-tourists don’t take any marine life from the sea as a souvenir. They don’t take any amount of sand home. They do not litter. Yes, simple as that. These small actions create a significant impact, especially if done collectively.

Lastly, They Pick An Eco-Friendly Accommodation

Choose an eco-conscious place. Check your hotel’s commitment to sustainable tourism. Much more a place with its tranquil vibe where you can peacefully commune with nature.

Speaking of which, Pinnacle Resort and Villas is an ideal place for eco-tourists. The resort offers wide spaces where you can relax while enjoying the lush environment of the area. Pinnacle Boracay has dispensers to avoid the single-use of plastic and they used natural cleaning agents like vinegar and baking soda. In addition, the island-resort hotel also employs an electric vehicle as a hotel service. E-trikes are more convenient and even release much fewer carbon emissions.  The Hotel is also one of the resorts in Boracay that encourage responsible traveling with their guests.
